Community Involvement

The Redmond Senior & Community benefits the current and future community for generations to come.

Public Outreach Process

Four targeted community outreach campaigns between 2020 and 2021 thousands of seniors and community members on the urgency and priorities of this project. In addition, all pockets of the community provided input on amenities and the design that shaped the schematic design process.

From January 2021 to early April 2021, the project and design team completed extensive community involvement that involved thousands of seniors and community members through:

  • Reconvening the Recreation Stakeholder Group
  • Hosting four public meeting sessions on February 24 and March 24
  • Asking for feedback in two community-wide questionnaires
  • Monthly mailings of the Encore newsletter to Redmond seniors
  • Sending regular e-newsletters and social media articles about the project
  • Briefings each month with the City Council and Parks & Human Services Committee
  • Briefings each month with community organizations, commissions, and committees
  • Listening sessions with small groups of seniors and the design team
  • Collecting written comment cards, and a project inbox

The City will continue to involve the Redmond community to determine the programs and design of this facility.

A summary of all community outreach was presented to the City Council on June 22 (summary begins on page 8).

Recreation Stakeholder Group

The Recreation Stakeholder Group was formed in 2016 to discuss the options available for community and recreation space upon the transfer of the Old Redmond Schoolhouse back to Lake Washington School District. Since 2017, the Recreation Stakeholder Group has continued to provide recommendations to the Redmond City Council on:

  • Project timeline
  • Center amenities to prioritize
  • Locations for the new community center
  • Potential group partnerships
  • Project costs

In March 2020, the final recommendation from the Recreation Stakeholder Group was to construct an approximately 40,000 square foot Redmond Senior & Community Center with designated program space for seniors on the site of the old Redmond Senior Center. This new facility will be referred to as the Redmond Senior & and Community Center. See the March 2020 Stakeholder Group Summary Report for more information on their recommendation.

In 2021, the Redmond Stakeholder Group will continue to provide input on the Redmond Senior & Community Center design and amenities to City and design staff as the design process moves forward. Based on community and Recreation Stakeholder Group input, City staff will continue touchpoints with the Redmond City Council throughout 2021.
